Tidings of Joy

Telluride and Mountain Village celebrate the holidays with a number of family-friendly events that make this time of year in this corner of the San Juan Mountains especially joyous. Read More about Telluride Ski Resort and all the activities we love about Telluride.

It all begins in Telluride with Noel Night and the lighting of the Ski Tree, this year on Dec. 7. Telluride retailers serve up refreshments and offer prizes and discounts to shoppers on the hunt for those perfect holiday gifts. Appearances by Santa and carolers add to the festive atmosphere as the community supports local businesses and gets in the holiday spirit, all at the same time. Not to be missed is the lighting of the Ski Tree, which is made from recycled skis, in Elks Park.

Then, Dec. 10-11, Mountain Village transforms into a magical winter wonderland for its annual Holiday Prelude, a festive event put on by the Telluride Mountain Village Owner’s Association. Expect fun for the entire family with holiday-themed train rides, photos with Santa, ice skating and other surprises, along with shopping discounts and seasonal refreshments from Mountain Village retailers. Saturday’s events culminate in Heritage Plaza with the lighting of the Village’s exquisite (and enormous) tree and caroling.

In addition, a pair of holiday season torchlight parades makes for unforgettable spectacles. On Christmas Eve, members of the Telluride Ski and Snowboard School and Telluride Ski Patrol ski down from the top of the Gondola into Telluride. On New Year’s Eve, another equally memorable torchlight parade takes place followed by fireworks in Mountain Village. Also on New Year’s Eve is the gathering in front of the San Miguel County Courthouse on Telluride’s main street for the countdown to midnight.

Throughout the holiday season, the vibrant local arts scene has lots on offer too, with events that range from the Telluride Fire Festival to the Sheridan Opera House’s Holiday Concert Series, as well as performances by Telluride TheatrePalm Arts/Palm Dance, the Telluride Choral Society and more. The Telluride Tourism Board (telluride.com) maintains a comprehensive events calendar, with dates, times, locations and other helpful information, to help navigate the fun. Need help figuring out how to get here this holiday season? Here are some travel tips.

It all makes for a sparkling holiday season that pairs perfectly with the vibe communitywide as Santa’s take to the slopes in full regalia, holiday meal preparation is suspended for a few hours on the hill with friends and family and loved ones gathering to celebrate in the most beautiful backyard on Earth.

So how can we sum up the holidays in Telluride and Mountain Village? Full of joy and the joys of community.
